As product people, a core element of our job is identifying and defining problems. We spot them, research them, and then poke, prod, and refine them until we can clearly explain it from all sides. Enter: AI!
Great PMs can tell you what the problem is, who is facing it, why it’s a problem for them, and a dozen other facets that provide context and a thorough understanding.
This process of shaping a problem can be difficult to do by yourself, especially in a fully remote role. That’s why great products are built by collaborative, cross-functional teams - it’s easier to develop a thorough understanding of the problem you want to solve by working together. It’s also much faster 🙂
If you’re like me - working in a fully remote role where you aren’t elbow to elbow with your team - you don’t have the luxury of being able to do that as easily.
You can use AI tools like Chat GPT as a stand in when you wish you were standing at a whiteboard with a living, breathing teammate. I’ve come to think of it as an on-demand thought partner. Here are a few basic ways I’ve found it a decent alternative for a conversation with a teammate:
Get a sense check: You know when you’re crafting a story and need a quick gut check on whether arguments check out? Instead of turning to your teammate next to you, give GPT the context and your story. Ask what’s missing and ask how it might refute your argument!
Identify risks and blind spots in a strategy: When I’m making strategic decisions, I write up as much relevant context as I can and ask for critique - what other risks do you see? How could this be improved?
Generate solution ideas: Input the details and context about the problem and ask it to help come up with potential solutions.
How are you using AI tools in your day to day? Post your ideas in the comments section!
