Interviewing? Cover Letters are a Massive Waste of Time

Writer: Founder ErikFounder Erik

Just don’t do it. Don’t even think about it. Stop writing cover letters.

Think cover letters are an opportunity to make an impression? To differentiate and stand out? Think again.

In my entire decade-plus experience hiring product managers I have not once hired someone because of a cover letter. I don’t even think I’ve ever brought someone into a hiring process because of a cover letter. Never has a cover letter influenced my hiring process.

As a hiring leader, I need to see a great resume. That’s what I care about. I want to see specifics, product skills, quantitative impact and qualitative leadership. Your LinkedIn profile helps. I will go to your profile and check for any additional content and to see that your resume and LinkedIn tells a compelling and consistent story.

Your cover letter? I'm never going to get it, let alone read it. So if you’re writing cover letters, you can stop. Please pass along this message. Together, we can help Product Managers save thousands of hours of precious time.
